"Don't you just check books in and out all day? How hard can that be?" oh my.
How hard is it to be a librarian? Well, I have a Bachelor's of English from Eastern Illinois University with a teaching certificate, and then I also have a Master's degree from the University of Illinois School of Library and Information Sciences. That's about 6 years of additional training after high school.
I work with all levels of readers recommending books and helping students find books they will like, no matter their reading ability. That's one of my favorite things to do. I also pick out which new books to order, then I get them ready once they arrive. I write grants, maintain the library database, reshelve and repair books as necessary, and I try to monitor what new books are most popular with young people today! I also work with teachers on a variety of projects, and I NEVER get to read books while at work.
Here's a more detailed look at some of the things I do, but certainly not all. . .
